Leipziger Streichquartett

The Leipzig String Quartet (LSQ), or Leipziger Streichquartett, is a German chamber quartet, established in 1988; formerly known as New Leipzig String Quartet (until 1995). The original members first met when playing in Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, as well as Steffen Schleiermacher's Ensemble Avantgarde.

Coincidentally, all recent personnel changes in LSQ were marred in certain controversy. The first violin [a=Stefan Arzberger] resigned from the Quartet in late 2015 after seven years, due to his arrest in New York on accusations of "attempted murder;" he was replaced by [a=Conrad Muck]. Around the same time, in 2018, the ensemble fired its founding cellist, [a=Matthias Moosdorf], after 30 years, due to his increasingly radical far-right and ultranationalist political affiliation and troublesome, controversial public statements; shortly after, Peter Bruns replaced him. Meanwhile, Arzberger pleaded guilty to lesser charges in the US court in 2016, unconditionally discharged without serving jail time, and was finally able to come back to Germany. After the ensuing media scandal eventually died out, he quietly returned to LSQ.
