The son of actress Roxie Roker (*The Jeffersons*) and television producer Sy Kravitz, he grew up between New York and Los Angeles in a household that Exposed him to jazz, classical, gospel, and rock. Having taught himself multiple instruments and developed his studio craft independently, he released debut Album *Love-rule">Let Love Rule* (1989) to modest commercial success but immediate critical recognition of his extraordinary instrumental facility and authentic vintage sound. *Mama Said* (1991) and *You-gonna-go-my-way">Are You Gonna Go My Way* (1993) brought mainstream breakthrough — the title track of the latter, a thunderous riff-rock song channelling Jimi Hendrix and early heavy rock, became one of the decade's most recognisable rock anthems and reached the top five in numerous countries. The album's combination of guitar heroics, soul warmth, and retro-futurist cool made Kravitz one of rock's most distinctive presences. *Baptism* (2004), *It Is Time For A Love Revolution* (2008), *Black And White America* (2011), and *Raise Vibration* (2018) maintained his activity, while his acting career — including a notable role as Cinna in *The Hunger Games* films — widened his cultural profile. Four consecutive Grammy wins for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance (1999–2002) remains a record.
