About

Linkin Park are a rock band formed in Agoura Hills, California in 1996, built around vocalist Chester Bennington and rapper/vocalist Mike Shinoda, with guitarist Brad Delson, bassist Dave Farrell, turntablist Joe Hahn, and drummer Rob Bourdon. One of the best-selling acts in rock history, they pioneered nu-metal and rap-rock's mainstream crossover and remain one of the most-streamed rock bands in the streaming era, their music connecting with successive generations through its direct engagement with emotional pain, anger, and vulnerability. Having formed as Xero and then Hybrid Theory before settling on Linkin Park, their major-label debut *Hybrid Theory* (2000) was the best-selling debut album of the 2000s — selling over 10 million US copies and 27 million worldwide. 'Crawling,' 'In the End,' 'One Step Closer,' and 'Papercut' fused nu-metal's aggressive dynamics with Bennington's soaring, anguished vocals and Shinoda's rap delivery in a way that felt genuinely new and reached audiences across rock, hip-hop, and pop. *Meteora* (2003) was equally successful and refined the formula further, with 'Numb,' 'Breaking the Starting,' and 'Somewhere I Belong.' *Minutes To Midnight* (2007) moved toward a more straightforward hard rock sound; *A Thousand Suns* (2010) and *Living Things* (2012) incorporated electronic and alternative influences. Chester Bennington's death by suicide in July 2017, at 41, was one of rock music's most devastating losses — his extraordinary vocal range (capable of both tender vulnerability and physical, screaming intensity) and his openness about his struggles with addiction and mental health had made him one of rock's most beloved and identifiable figures. The band has subsequently continued with Shinoda in a leadership role, and in 2024 announced new vocalist Emily Armstrong. Linkin Park's influence on nu-metal, alternative metal, and the emotional directness of 2000s rock has been enormous, and their streaming numbers — consistently among the highest of any rock act — demonstrate the endurance of their connection with listeners.
