    Liquid Hips

Liquid Hips was an American crossover funk/punk/noise/rap/art/hardrock band from New York, born in August of 1981 as a cooperative post-post punk electric jazz hardcore freebop unit. The first show was that month at the legendary A7 in the East Village. The founding members were John Mulkerin, Jay Joseph, and Rob Reynolds. By the mid '80's, the band had become a songwriting vehicle for frontman John Mulkerin, who was also a member of Joseph Bowie's Defunkt. By then, the sound of Liquid Hips had become more funk/groove oriented, and the lyrics became more pointedly political. The first track (Surveillance) of the band's 1993 debut album "Fool Injection" had been performed live since 1988. Not many recordings survive from the '80's, but the band performed at such NYC nightspots as: Danceteria, CBGB, Cat Club, Pyramid, Knitting Factory, B.A.D. Museum, SNAFU, Visiones, etc. Liquid Hips was part of the first wave of bands to successfully meld deep funk with a hardcore/rap/metal edge. The main 1990's touring lineup was: John Mulkerin (trumpet, vocals), Jeff McErlain and Bill Bickford (guitars) Kip Reed (bass) Kenny Martin (drums) and Rob Reynolds (percussion). Liquid Hips toured Europe 5 times in the nineties, and opened shows for P-Funk, Public Enemy, The Freaky Fukin' Weirdoz, Blurt, and Ice-T.
