Ludovico Einaudi

Ludovico Einaudi is an Italian pianist and composer born in Turin in 1955. The son of Giulio Einaudi, founder of the Einaudi publishing house, he studied composition at the Milan Conservatory and subsequently under Luciano Berio, one of the major figures of the European avant-garde. He began his career in classical and contemporary composition before developing the more accessible, meditative piano style that would bring him global recognition. Le Onde (1996), released on Ricordi, established the aesthetic that would define his popular work — minimal, repetitive piano figures, slow harmonic movement, and a contemplative atmosphere influenced by minimalist composers Philip Glass and Steve Reich as well as film scoring traditions. Eden Roc (1999), I Giorni (2001), and Una Mattina (2004) built a loyal audience, particularly in the UK where his records consistently charted. Night (2006) and Nightbook (2009) continued the trajectory, and his compositions appeared in film and television soundtracks — most notably This Is England (2006) and The Intouchables (2011). In a Time Lapse (2013) was his most ambitious studio recording, featuring orchestral arrangements alongside Solo piano. Elements (2015) and Seven Days Walking (2019), a seven-album project releasing one album per month and exploring the same musical themes across different emotional registers, demonstrated both his productivity and his devoted global audience. Einaudi is one of the best-selling classical and neoclassical artists in the world, frequently cited alongside Max Richter and Ólafur Arnalds as a figure who has made contemporary classical music widely accessible.
