About

M.I.A. is the stage name of Mathangi 'Maya' Arulpragasam, a British-Sri Lankan musician, visual artist, and filmmaker born in 1975 in Hounslow, London. One of the most politically outspoken and sonically adventurous artists of the 2000s, she brought global bass music, Sri Lankan Tamil culture, hip-hop, and political urgency into a collision that produced some of the decade's most thrillingly dissonant pop music. Born to Tamil parents and spending formative years in Sri Lanka during the civil war before returning to London as a refugee, her experiences of displacement and conflict are central to her work. Trained as a visual artist at St Martin's School of Art, she began making music in her twenties after becoming involved in the London grime and garage scene. Her debut *Arular* (2005) — named after her father, a Tamil activist — was a startling arrival: a record combining dancehall, bhangra, hip-hop, electroclash, and African beats over which she rapped and sang political observations with brash, exhilarating confidence. 'Galang' and 'Bucky Done Gun' were immediate indie dance anthems. *Kala* (2007) expanded the palette further, sampling sources from Baltimore club music to Bollywood, and contained 'Paper Planes' — a sardonic commentary on immigration and capitalism built over a sample of The Clash's 'Straight to Hell' — which became a global hit after its use in *Slumdog Millionaire* and *Pineapple Express*. *Maya* (2010) was abrasive and industrial, deliberately confrontational; *Matangi* (2013) more psychedelic and spiritual. Her 2012 Super Bowl performance — during which she made an obscene gesture — generated considerable controversy. M.I.A.'s influence on global bass music, genre-blending, and the politicisation of pop is substantial, and her visual work — including her own music videos — has been consistently striking.
