M83

M83 is the project of French musician Anthony Gonzalez, born in 1980 in Antibes, France. Named after the spiral galaxy Messier 83, the project began as a duo with Nicolas Fromageau before becoming Gonzalez's solo vehicle, producing a body of work that fuses ambient Electronica, shoegaze, synthpop, and cinematic orchestration into immersive, emotionally overwhelming soundscapes. Early records *M83* (2001) and *Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts* (2003) were dense shoegaze-influenced electronic works indebted to My Bloody Valentine and Boards of Canada, establishing Gonzalez's fascination with texture, nostalgia, and the sublime. *Before the Dawn Heals Us* (2005) and *Digital Shades Vol. 1* (2007) pushed further into dreamy ambient territory, and *Saturdays = Youth* (2008) was an explicitly nostalgic homage to 1980s John Hughes films and new wave, featuring guest vocals from Morgan Kibby. *Hurry Up, We're Dreaming* (2011), a sprawling double album, was his commercial and critical breakthrough. The euphoric 'Midnight City' — built around a wailing saxophone, massed synth layers, and a child choir — became one of the decade's most recognisable indie anthems, appearing in hundreds of advertisements and film trailers. The album's ambition and emotional scope were extraordinary, ranging from ambient interludes to soaring teenage-symphony pop. Subsequent records *Junk* (2016) and *DSVII* (2019) explored different facets of his palette — the former a deliberately kitsch, neon-drenched exercise in retro pastiche, the latter a return to pure ambient atmosphere. Gonzalez has also built a significant career as a film and television composer, scoring work that extends his gift for emotional orchestration into dramatic contexts. M83's work occupies a unique space between accessibility and grandeur, using the textures of electronic music to pursue something approaching the sublime.
