Manchester Orchestra

Manchester Orchestra are an American rock band formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 2004, anchored by vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter Andy Hull. Despite the British city name — chosen while the members were teenagers — they are emphatically American: rooted in post-hardcore, emo, and indie rock, with a sound that builds from quiet introspection to overwhelming volume.

I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child (2006) announced an unusually ambitious debut — emotionally raw and sonically expansive. Mean Everything To Nothing (2009) was their commercial breakthrough, winning them a wider audience with its more accessible but still intense guitar rock. Simple Math (2011) was their most ambitious statement, a conceptual work about faith, doubt, and family that displayed Hull's gifts as a writer.

Cope (2014) and its gentler counterpart Hope (2014) — released as companion pieces — explored the same material through different emotional lenses. A Black Mile To The Surface (2017) and The Million Masks Of God (2021) continued their evolution toward a more cinematic sound, with The Million Masks addressing mortality with a directness that earned some of the best reviews of their career.

Manchester Orchestra occupy a singular position in American rock: too emotionally committed for mainstream alternative radio, too melodically sophisticated for post-hardcore, and too loud for folk. Alongside Frightened Rabbit and Band of Horses, they make music that insists on being felt.
