About

American No Wave / experimental rock band founded in late 1975 in New York City, when vocalist Sumner Crane and his then-girlfriend Nancy Arlen, met Connie Burg and Mark Cunningham.

The band was first named China, but changed their name to Mars in mid-1977. They gave their last show, and recording an EP (that came out in 1980) in December 1978. Soon after they disbanded, with the main reason being the lack of interest from clubs to book the band, plus Arlen wanting to concentrate on her art.

The other three members soon played together again as John Gavanti, with Ikue Mori of DNA on drums.
