Matchbox Twenty

Matchbox Twenty are an American rock band from Orlando, Florida, formed in 1995, originally under the name Matchbox. Led by vocalist Rob Thomas alongside guitarists Kyle Cook and Paul Doucette, bassist Brian Yale, and drummer Matt O'Donnell, the band became one of the defining acts of 1990s and 2000s alternative rock — popular with mainstream audiences while retaining enough guitar-driven credibility to be respected by indie rock enthusiasts. Matchbox Twenty (1996) and Yourself or Someone Like You (1998) established them as major commercial and critical forces. The latter album, featuring the hit single 3AM, became one of the best-selling albums of the late 1990s, defining a sound of earnest, emotional alt-rock with strong melancholic undertones. More Than You Think You Are (2002) continued the trajectory, debuting at number two on the Billboard chart and producing hit singles. Exile on Mainstream (2007) and North (2012) found the band continuing to refine their approach while never straying far from the core sound that built their audience. Matchbox Twenty disbanded in 2005 but reunited in 2007, and have continued to tour regularly. Rob Thomas has also pursued a successful solo career, while the band has released new material including Never Stop (2022). They remain popular live attractions and a significant presence in American rock music.
