Mogwai

Mogwai are a Scottish post-rock band formed in Glasgow in 1995, built around guitarists Stuart Braithwaite and John Cummings, bassist Dominic Aitchison, and drummer Martin Bulloch. Largely instrumental, their music is characterised by dynamic extremes — long passages of quiet, textural guitar building to overwhelming walls of distortion and noise. They are widely regarded as one of the defining acts in post-rock. Their 1997 debut Young Team established the core elements of their approach, featuring the now-iconic track Mogwai Fear Satan, a nearly 16-minute exercise in sustained tension and release. Come On Die Young (1999) refined the formula with a quieter, more melancholic approach, while Rock Action (2001) introduced strings and more pop-influenced song structures. Happy Songs For Happy People (2003), Mr. Beast (2006), The Hawk Is Howling (2008), and Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will (2011) each added new textures and influences while maintaining the band's commitment to purely instrumental music — with occasional vocal appearances. Rave Tapes (2014) brought prominent synthesizer use into the foreground, an evolution that continued across Atomic (2016), Every Country's Sun (2017), and As The Love Continues (2021), which became their first UK number one album. Mogwai have also composed extensively for film and television, including soundtracks for the TV series Les Revenants and Kin, and the film Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait. Their influence on post-rock, ambient, and heavy music has been enormous.
