About

Nada Surf are an American alternative rock band formed in New York City in 1992, centred on vocalist and guitarist Matthew Caws alongside bassist Daniel Lorca and drummer Ira Elliot. The band became briefly famous for their 1996 single Popular, a sardonic take on teenage social hierarchies that received heavy MTV rotation — an early commercial peak that the band swiftly moved past. Following label difficulties with Elektra Records, Nada Surf rebuilt their career through a series of increasingly strong albums that found devoted audiences through word of mouth. The Proximity Effect (1998) and Let Go (2002), the latter released on Barsuk Records, showcased a more refined, emotionally direct songwriting approach that earned the band widespread critical reassessment and a loyal cult following. Weight Is a Gift (2005) and Lucky (2008) consolidated that reputation, with Lucky in particular drawing praise for its melodic craft and lyrical openness. The band have continued to release records steadily — If I Had A Hi-Fi (2010), a covers album, The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy (2012), You Know Who You Are (2016), and Never Not Together (2020) — while touring consistently and maintaining one of the more devoted fanbases in independent rock. Nada Surf are a quiet success story of alternative rock longevity: a band who outlasted their early hype to build something more durable, appreciated for craft and consistency rather than commercial flash.
