Nas

Nas is an American rapper and songwriter born Nasir Jones on September 14, 1973 in the Queensbridge Houses, Long Island City, New York — the largest public housing project in the United States, and a formative subject of his work. The son of jazz musician Olu Dara, Nas came of age during hip-hop's golden era and became one of its most celebrated lyricists, known for his cinematic storytelling, intricate wordplay, and unflinching portrait of street life and its consequences.

Illmatic (1994), released when Nas was twenty, is widely considered one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever made — ten tracks, forty minutes, and a lyrical density and emotional truth that changed the vocabulary of the genre. Just five beats from five producers (including DJ Premier and Pete Rock), The Album remains a standard by which rap albums are measured.

It Was Written (1996) demonstrated his commercial range, while I Am... (1999) and Stillmatic (2001) — the latter including Ether, his devastating diss response to Jay-Z — showed his capacity to channel personal conflict into essential music. God's Son (2002), Street's Disciple (2004), and Hip Hop Is Dead (2006) maintained his status as one of the genre's foremost voices.

King's Disease (2020), King's Disease II (2021), and Magic (2021) — all produced by Hit-Boy — represented a remarkable late-career resurgence, earning Grammy recognition and returning him to the conversation as one of rap's active best. Nas and Jay-Z are the twin poles around which East Coast hip-hop's greatest achievements orbit.
