It was founded as the Orchester Des NWDR Hamburg (affiliated to Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk) in 1945 and renamed to NDR Sinfonieorchester in 1955/56. Since April 2016 the orchestra is residing at the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg under its current name.
Chief conductor:
• Thomas Hengelbrock (2011 to 2018)
• Alan Gilbert (since season 2019/2020)
