Ngozi Family

The Ngozi Family was a foundational Zambian rock band formed in Lusaka in 1975, led by guitarist and vocalist Paul Nyirongo, better known as Paul Ngozi. The group was a primary exponent of the "Zamrock" genre, characterized by a fusion of heavy psychedelic rock, garage rock, and traditional rhythms. Their sound was defined by prominent fuzz-distorted guitar work and lyrics that addressed the social and economic issues of post-independence Zambia. The original core lineup featured Paul Ngozi (lead guitar, vocals), Tommy Mwale (bass), Chrissy Zebby Tembo (drums), and Peter Bwalya (rhythm guitar).

The band’s recording history began in the mid-1970s with sessions that prioritized high-energy performance. Although released around 1976, the album [m250243] was recorded at Sapra Studios in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1974. This was followed by their debut studio album as a group, [m784997], released in 1976. During this prolific period, they released a string of albums on local independent labels such as Zambia Music Parlour (ZMP) and Chris Editions, including [m3670452]i (1976), [m444474] (1977), and [m1231251] (1977).

In addition to their studio output, the Ngozi Family was a significant touring act. They frequently performed in community halls and social clubs throughout the Copperbelt and Lusaka. Their international activity included performances in Nairobi, Kenya, where their set at the Nairobi International Casino was captured on the live recording [m1726946]. In early 1978, they traveled to London, England, to record the album [m942422] at Electronaut Studios London

As the Zambian music market shifted toward the Kalindula style in the early 80's, Paul Ngozi adapted the band’s sound to incorporate more kalindula elements. While the group's activity slowed toward the end of the decade, Paul Ngozi remained active until his death in 1989. International interest in Zamrock in the 2010's led to archival reissues of the band's rock output by labels such as Now-Again Records.
