About

Nickelback are a rock band formed in Hanna, Alberta, Canada in 1995, comprising vocalist and guitarist Chad Kroeger, guitarist Ryan Peake, bassist Mike Kroeger, and drummer Daniel Adair (who replaced original drummer Brandon Kroeger). One of the most commercially successful rock bands of the 2000s, they sold over 50 million albums worldwide and dominated rock radio across the decade, while simultaneously becoming perhaps the most mocked band in internet culture history — a paradox that says as much about the gap between popularity and critical prestige as it does about their music. Having built a following through relentless touring of the Canadian club circuit, their breakthrough came with *Silver Side Up* (2001) and the massive hit 'How You Remind Me,' which became the most-played song on US radio in the 2000s decade. The song's post-grunge dynamics — quiet verse, loud chorus — and Kroeger's raspy, emotionally unambiguous delivery established a formula that *The Long Road* (2003), *All the Right Reasons* (2005), and *Dark Horse* (2008) would refine and repeat with remarkable commercial consistency. *All the Right Reasons* in particular was a global phenomenon: seven of its eleven songs were released as singles, and the album produced 'Photograph,' 'Far Away,' 'Rockstar,' and 'Savin' Me,' each reaching top ten positions in multiple countries and spending extended periods on rock radio playlists. The album sold over 11 million copies worldwide. *Here and Now* (2011), *No Fixed Address* (2014), *Feed the Machine* (2017), and *Get Rollin'* (2022) have maintained their fanbase's loyalty. The internet mockery directed at Nickelback — originating from music critics and online communities circa 2010 — has become a cultural phenomenon independent of their music, and their continued commercial success despite it represents an instructive lesson in the irrelevance of critical consensus to popular taste.
