Okkervil River

Okkervil River are an American indie folk-rock band formed in Austin, Texas in 1998, led by vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Will Sheff. Named after a short story by Russian author Tatyana Tolstaya, they have produced one of the more consistently literary bodies of work in American independent music — songs dense with narrative, allusion, and carefully observed emotional detail.

Down The River Of Golden Dreams (2003) and Black Sheep Boy (2005) established Sheff as one of indie rock's most compelling writers — capable of writing character-driven narratives with the structure of short stories. The Stage Names (2007) and The Stand Ins (2008) were their most acclaimed releases, dealing with fame, artistic compromise, and the gap between performed and private selves.

I Am Very Far (2011) and The Silver Gymnasium (2013) demonstrated Sheff's ongoing ambition — the latter a concept album about 1980s small-town New Hampshire life, full of nostalgic detail and genuine emotional complexity. Away (2016) and In the Rainbow Rain (2018) found him experimenting with more expansive production.

Solid Sounds (2023) and Band Together (2025) continued a career built on the belief that rock songs can carry the weight of real literature. For fans of Bright Eyes and Conor Oberst's confessional mode, Okkervil River offer more craft, more restraint — and ultimately more depth.
