About

Orplid is a German neofolk, martial, post-industrial and experimental duo founded by Uwe Nolte and Frank Machau in 1996.

The name “Orplid” was taken from the poem “Gesang Weylas” by Eduard Mörike, which begins with the line ‘Du bist Orplid, mein Land’ ('You are Orplid, my land').

The band draws inspiration from many classical German poets and has set a number of poems to music by such greats as Friedrich Schiller, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Joseph von Eichendorff, Gottfried Benn, Oda Schaefer, Frank Wedekind and Rolf Schilling.

The lyrics penned by vocalist Uwe Nolte himself cover topics from Germanic paganism and Greek mythology to medieval Christianity and German nature romanticism.

Over the years, the band has broadened its musical pallet, thereby widening their reach from the early days in the neofolk niche-subculture, to become an established act in the broader gothic subculture.
