Passenger is the stage name of British singer-songwriter Michael David Rosenberg, born in Brighton in 1984. Beginning as the lead vocalist of a band also called Passenger in the mid-2000s, Rosenberg relaunched the name as a solo project following the group's dissolution and developed a distinctive folk-pop sound built on fingerpicked acoustic guitar, a weathered tenor voice, and emotionally direct, narrative-driven songwriting. Building a following through relentless street performing — famously busking in Sydney's Pitt Street Mall and developing an audience in Australia before gaining wider traction — he released several independent albums before All the Little Lights (2012) brought him to significant commercial attention. Let Her Go, a song of loss and regret whose chorus hinges on the observation that 'you only miss the sun when it starts to snow,' reached number one across Europe and in Australia, eventually becoming one of the most-streamed songs of the decade with billions of plays. Subsequent albums — Whispers (2014), Whispers II (2015), Young as the Morning Old as the Sea (2016), and a run of further releases — maintained his prolific output and devoted audience without generating another single of equivalent scale. Rosenberg has continued to tour extensively and release music independently, his career defined by its grassroots foundations and its distance from conventional industry infrastructure.
