Patrick Watson is a Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Montreal, Quebec. Leading a band of the same name alongside bassist Mishka Stein, guitarist Simon Angell, and drummer Robbie Kuster, Watson has built a reputation over two decades as one of the most distinctive voices in art pop and chamber folk, his music defined by an extraordinary falsetto voice, rich orchestral arrangements, and a consistently intimate emotional register. Close to Paradise (2006) announced the project to an international audience, winning the Polaris Music Prize — Canada's most prestigious music award — in 2007, one of the earlier recipients of that award and a genuine surprise given the record's quiet, chamber-folk approach.
