Pendulum

Pendulum are an Australian drum and bass band formed in Perth, Western Australia in 2002, who relocated to the UK early in their career and became one of the most commercially successful drum and bass acts of the 2000s. The group — centred on Rob Swire, Gareth McGrillen, and Paul Harding — combined the energy and tempo of drum and bass with live guitar, rock songwriting structures, and enormous melodic hooks, creating a crossover sound that appealed to both electronic music and rock audiences. Hold Your Colour (2005), their debut album, was a landmark in drum and bass — technically accomplished and melodically accessible, it introduced the band to a large international audience. In Silico (2008) pushed further into rock territory, debuting at number one in the UK and Australia and producing the singles Granite, Salt in the Wounds, and Propane Nightmares. It remains one of the best-selling drum and bass albums ever made. Immersion (2010) continued the trajectory, debuting at number two in the UK and demonstrating the band's ability to maintain their audience while refining their sonic palette. The group went on hiatus in 2012, with Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen founding the electronic duo Knife Party. Pendulum reformed for live shows in 2016 and returned to recording, releasing the EP The Reworks (2020) and subsequently new original material. Their influence on the development of drum and bass and its interaction with rock music has been considerable, and their live performances — notable for their energy and production scale — remain highly regarded.
