San Francisco's Psychefunkapus was a hybrid of funk, ska, metal, rockabilly, and progressive elements led by Jonnie Axtell and Atom Ellis. They got their name from their love of psychedelic music and a reference to a P-Funk song warning the coming of the "Funkapus". The band released two albums for Atlantic, 1990's self-titled debut and 1991's Skin, before disbanding after the U.S. tour. Axtell went on to play with Gene Genie and Ellis played with Dieselhed throughout the rest of the '90s.
Psychefunkapus reunited to raise funds for L.A.'s City of Hope Cancer Center January 2, 2010 at Slim's in San Francisco.
