About

Queen were a rock band formed in London in 1970, comprising vocalist Freddie Mercury, guitarist Brian May, bassist John Deacon, and drummer Roger Taylor. One of the most theatrically ambitious, musically versatile, and commercially successful rock acts in history, they created a catalogue of singular grandeur — combining hard rock, opera, music hall, pop, and disco into a sound that was unmistakably theirs — and their live performances, particularly At Live Aid in 1985, are among the most celebrated in rock history. Having formed from the remnants of band Smile, with Mercury replacing vocalist Tim Staffell, their self-titled debut (1973) and *Queen II* (1974) established their multi-layered guitar and vocal approach. *Sheer Heart Attack* (1974) and *A Night At The Opera* (1975) — the latter containing 'Bohemian Rhapsody,' the six-minute operatic rock epic that Mercury wrote and produced — broke them globally. 'Bohemian Rhapsody' reached number one for nine weeks in the UK, pioneered the use of promotional video, and has periodically returned to the charts across five decades. *A Day At The Races* (1976), *News Of The World* (1977, containing 'We Will Rock You' and 'We Are the Champions'), *Jazz* (1978), *The Game* (1980, their most commercially successful album), and *Hot Space* (1982, incorporating disco and funk to mixed reaction) demonstrated extraordinary stylistic range. The Live Aid performance in July 1985 is widely considered the greatest live performance in rock history. Mercury's death from AIDS-related pneumonia in November 1991 ended the classic lineup, though the band has continued with various vocalists — most notably Paul Rodgers (2004–2009) and, since 2012, Adam Lambert, whose vocal power has made the Queen + Adam Lambert touring project a major concert draw. The 2018 biopic *Bohemian Rhapsody* and the ongoing streaming success of their catalogue — 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is one of Spotify's most-streamed songs of all time — have ensured their cultural presence across generations.
