Ready D - real name Deon - was born in District Six, Cape Town. Growing up on the desolate Cape Flats, Deon, was constantly surrounded by gangs, poverty and a lack of identity - a legacy of the forced removals from District Six. During his teens, however, Deon found refuge with the beginnings of the Hip Hop culture, and started breakdancing. At the age of 15 he joined a crew - Ballastic Rockers - which featured Ramone, Jazmo and Gogga who would later also combine to form POC. A turning point in Deon's career was a trip to Liverpool, England, sponsored by a friend. Here Deon, came into contact with some of the top DJ's plying their trade at the time. On returning to Cape Town, Deon acquired his first pair of Lenco turntables ... it was the birth of Ready D the DJ. ...In 1990 Ready D entered the South African National DJ Championship ... he has won it three times since, and remains the most skilled and versatile Hip Hop DJ in South Africa. Also known as The Black Battle Cat and DJ X-Plode.
