About

Red Hot Chili Peppers are a rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1983, built around the long-standing creative partnership of vocalist Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea (Michael Balzary), with guitarist John Frusciante (intermittently) and drummer Chad Smith. One of the most successful rock acts in history, they pioneered a fusion of funk, punk, hard rock, and psychedelia that was entirely their own and has sold over 80 million records worldwide. Early albums *The Red Hot Chili Peppers* (1984), *Freaky Styley* (1985, produced by George Clinton), and *The Uplift Mofo Party Plan* (1987) established their funk-punk identity and built a devoted Los Angeles fanbase, though they were marked by tragedy — guitarist Hillel Slovak died of a heroin overdose in 1988, and drummer Jack Irons left following a breakdown. The addition of John Frusciante and Chad Smith stabilised the lineup. *Blood Sugar Sex Magik* (1991), produced by Rick Rubin, was their commercial breakthrough and creative peak — a double-length album of extraordinary variety, ranging from the funk attack of 'Give It Away' to the heartbreaking ballad 'Under the Bridge.' It sold over 13 million US copies and established them as one of rock's most important acts. Frusciante's departure and *One Hot Minute* (1995, with Dave Navarro) was a comparatively troubled period, but his return for *Californication* (1999) triggered their second commercial peak — 'Scar Tissue,' 'Otherside,' and 'Californication' brought them to a new global audience. *By The Way* (2002) and *Stadium Arcadium* (2006) continued their dominance. *The Getaway* (2016, produced by Danger Mouse, without Frusciante) and *Unlimited Love* (2022, with Frusciante returning again) have extended their six-decade activity. Flea's status as one of rock's greatest bassists, Kiedis's singular vocal persona, and Frusciante's guitar mastery have made them one of rock's most enduring creative forces.
