Selan

American multi-instrumentalist and producer, from Queens, New York City, USA.

Selan is the recording name for multi-instrumentalist Selan Lerner, who grew-up in Queens, NYC ("Selan" is derivative of "Se-lah"; Hebrew for musical pause in the bible). By age 3 he'd taught himself to play the piano, and his parents of Trinidadian and Jewish heritage exposed him at an early age to classical/symphonic music, along with jazz. He possesses "total recall" (ability to play any song from memory) with "perfect pitch" (ability to hear something once and automatically know how to translate it musically).

Throughout high school, while continuing to learn piano, after hearing complete symphonic compositions in his head, would fully realize them on piano to cassette tapes, selling them to his classmates. Although having musical ideas, he found it difficult to find the proper outlet, so with no contacts to guide or give him a break, and failed attempts as session work for commercial jingles, he did a series of temp jobs. But in 1996 he got a job performing in a band on episodes of the Fox series "NY Undercover", blossoming into a career as a sideman and musical director for many R&B/pop music recording artists.

Whilst continuing to enjoy touring and performing on TV with other artists, he has gone on to make his own works, typically recording under his first name.

Selan plays many instruments along with singing, some of these include keyboards, trumpet, drums/programming; also doing other roles as songwriter, composer, producer, and musical director.
