Shingo Inao

Shingo Inao (b. 1980) is a Japanese musician, instrument builder and installation artist currently based in Berlin. He studied computer music and sound installation with Takayuki Rai, Susumu Shono, and Takayuki Hayashi at Kunitachi College Of Music Sonology Department. Inao moved to Germany to learn media art at Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe and graduated with honors from Bauhaus University in Weimar after finishing the master's program in sound installation/object under Robin Minard.

Inao has been performing via sonification of his body movements through sensor-driven techniques. He plays on self-made instruments with tilt and distance sensors: a contrabass-like Tosso and hand-sized device Qgo. Shingo gave concerts in Germany, Switzerland, Russia, and Japan and participated in a few festivals, such as Kunitachi College Of Music Sonology Department (Berlin), Electro-Mechanica (St. Peterburg), and Leipjazzig Festival (Leipzig). In 2006, he joined Rie Watanabe in a percussion/electronic duo Rhyngo. Inao also collaborated with Marco Brosolo on the world premiere of Matthias Fritsch's interpretation Landschaft No.2.

Apart from live performances, Shingo Inao exhibits audio installations and objects. His works are focused on how sound can change and interact with a room's structure. In 2007, his debut exhibition took place at Gallery Birgit Ostermeier in Berlin. Other pieces were shown at various exhibitions and festivals in Japan, Europe, and the USA. Inao is also an official artist of the Gallery Mario Mazzoli in Berlin.
