About

Indie-Rock band formed by Akis Boyatzis, in Athens, Greece, in 1997.

Sigmatropic was formed when Boyiatzis abandoned the new wave-power punk persona of the 80s (Cpt Neφos, Libido Blume) and centered on computer-based electronica. The project soon went from a one-man band centered around a home studio, to transforming into a full-fledged indie-rock band with an intense concert and recording activity.

From the early days of “Random Walk” (1998) until today, Sigmatropic are in a continuous creative search with a music that is at the forefront of international production. Their album “Sixteen Haiku and Other Stories” (2002, their only Greek-language release to date), consisting of music, atmospheres and songs based entirely on poems by George Seferis, surprised many and received rave reviews.

Even more surprising was its follow-up, the international “Sixteen Haiku and Other Stories” (2003), which features singers from the US and Britain who perform essentially the same pieces in English versions of the lyrics. The track “Haiku 10” featuring Cat Power was a hit on iTunes downloads in the US, while Robert Wyatt’s participation in the opening track caused admiration and awe among music lovers around the world. Their participation in the first solo album of Carla Torgerson (of The Walkabouts / Chris & Carla) entitled “Saint Stranger” which was released in 2005 in Greece and abroad was a great sensation.

They have appeared countless times in concert venues throughout Greece, at various festivals such as Rockwave (1998 and 2005), The Music Festival (2004, 2006) and The Anti-Racist Festival (2007) and have opened concerts for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Placebo in Athens and Thessaloniki.
