Sleater-Kinney

Sleater-Kinney are an American punk and indie rock band formed in Olympia, Washington in 1994 by guitarists and vocalists Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein. Named after a road in Lacey, Washington, they emerged from the Pacific Northwest riot grrrl movement before evolving into one of the most critically celebrated and politically engaged rock bands of their generation. Their self-titled debut (1995) and Call The Doctor (1996) announced a furious, politically direct approach — dual guitars, no bass, two intertwining vocals, and a confrontational stance toward gender and power. Dig Me Out (1997), with drummer Janet Weiss completing the classic lineup, is widely considered their defining statement, a record of remarkable rhythmic intensity and emotional depth. The Hot Rock (1999) and All Hands on the Bad One (2000) continued to evolve the band's sound, while One Beat (2002) addressed post-9/11 America with characteristic directness. The Woods (2005), produced by Dave Fridmann, was their most experimental record — a dense, psychedelic guitar album that many critics now consider their masterpiece. The band went on hiatus in 2006. Returning in 2015 with No Cities to Love, Sleater-Kinney demonstrated that their powers were undiminished. The Center Won't Hold (2019), produced by St. Vincent, was followed by Janet Weiss's departure. Path of Wellness (2021) continued as a duo. Their influence on feminist rock music, and on indie rock more broadly, has been immense.
