Jazz-rock band formed in 1978 by ex members of Soft Machine. "Soft" being an obvious reference to their past band, and "Head" being the 4 initial letters of the musicians' first name : Hugh, Elton, Alan, and Dave. In fact, Dave Sheen was in the band only for the inaugural French tour of April 1978 in replacement of drummer Pip Pyle, busy with National Health. A recording of this tour was released on the LP 'Rogue Element' credited to the quartet of Hopper/Dean/Gowen/Sheen instead of the band's name.
At the end of the 1978 tour, Pip Pyle returned and the band took back its original name of Soft HeaP (with Pip instead of Dave).
