Orchestral and opera conductor renowned for his interpretations of the work of Benjamin Britten. Paternal grandson of composer Liza Lehmann, son of Lesley Duff and brother of composer David Bedford and singer Peter Bedford. Married to soprano Norma Burrowes from 1969 to 1980.
Musical Director of The English Opera Group from 1971 to 1998 and Artistic Director of the Aldeburgh Festival from 1974 to 1988. Worked on notable Mozart productions with the Garsington Opera from 1993.
Appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2016 New Year Honours for services to music.
