About

Steve Lacy is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer born in 1998 in Compton, California. One of the most gifted and original musical minds of his generation, he has built a career as both a sought-after production collaborator and solo artist, developing a sound that blends funk, R&B, indie rock, and psychedelic pop into something entirely his own — all largely created on an iPhone using GarageBand. Having joined the Compton-based collective The Internet as a teenager and contributing production and guitar to their acclaimed albums, he established his production credentials through contributions to Kendrick Lamar's *Damn.*, Vampire Weekend's *Father Of The Bride*, and J. Cole's *KOD* while still a teenager. His debut EP *Steve Lacy's Demo* (2017) — recorded entirely on his phone — was critically acclaimed for its bedroom-funk warmth and hinted at his solo potential. *Apollo XXI* (2019), his full debut, was a psychedelic, genre-fluid record exploring sexuality, identity, and romantic longing across a sound drawing on Prince, Stevie Wonder, and D'Angelo, with Lacy's delicate falsetto floating over dense, layered productions. It received widespread critical acclaim and demonstrated his breadth as a composer and arranger. *Gemini Rights* (2022) was his commercial breakthrough and artistic leap — a lean, confident record of indie-funk-rock that produced the massive crossover hit 'Bad Habit,' a song of missed romantic opportunity built on an acoustic guitar riff that reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent weeks atop streaming charts. The album's blend of emotional directness, genre fluidity, and production sophistication marked him as one of pop's most fully formed young talents. Lacy's openness about his bisexuality, his fashion collaborations, and his consistent refusal to be categorised by genre or identity have made him one of music's most compelling and culturally significant emerging figures.
