About

Sum 41 were a punk rock band formed in Ajax, Ontario, Canada in 1996, led by vocalist and guitarist Deryck Whibley alongside guitarist Jason McCaslin (later Dave Baksh and Tom Thacker), bassist Jason McCaslin, and drummer Tom Thacker. One of the defining acts of the early 2000s pop-punk and skate-punk wave, they combined Ramones-style chord progressions, metal riffs, and a goofball energy that made them MTV staples during punk's mainstream commercial peak. Debut album *All Killer No Filler* (2001) arrived at exactly the right moment — a lean, energetic record built on the singles 'Fat Lip' and 'In Too Deep' that distilled the pop-punk template to its most appealing form. 'Fat Lip' in particular, with its fusion of punk verses and hip-hop bridge, became a generational anthem and one of the decade's most recognisable rock songs. *Does This Look Infected?* (2002) pushed toward heavier metal territory, and *Chuck* (2004) — named after Canadian peacekeeper Chuck Pelletier who helped the band escape gunfire in the Democratic Republic of Congo — was their most ambitious record, incorporating progressive metal arrangements and concept-album ambition into their punk framework. Personal turmoil — including Whibley's near-fatal organ failure from alcoholism in 2014 — marked the years following *Screaming Bloody Murder* (2011) and *13 Voices* (2016), the latter made during Whibley's recovery and dealing explicitly with addiction. The band announced their final album *Heaven :x: Hell* (2024) before disbanding, providing a final statement that demonstrated the emotional depth Whibley had developed across three decades. Sum 41's influence on pop-punk and the generation of bands that followed — including State Champs, Neck Deep, and numerous others — has been considerable, and their early albums remain touchstones of the genre.
