Susannah McCorkle

American jazz singer,songwriter and author. Born January 1, 1946 in Berkeley, California. Died May 19, 2001 in New York City, New York (suicide). She was known for her direct, unadorned singing style and quiet intensity. She studied modern languages at the University of California, Berkeley. McCorkle began singing professionally after hearing recordings of Billie Holiday in Paris in the late 1960s. She moved to London in 1972 to pursue a career in singing. In the late 1970s, McCorkle returned to the U.S., settling in New York City, bringing her wider public attention and eliciting rave reviews from critics.
