About

SZA is the stage name of Solána Imani Rowe, a singer and songwriter born in 1989 in Maplewood, New Jersey. One of the central voices of contemporary R&B, she blends neo-soul warmth, alternative pop experimentation, and raw autobiographical lyricism in a style that has made her one of the most critically lauded and commercially successful artists of the 2020s. Raised in a Muslim household — her father was a CBS News executive, her mother a sales director — she studied marine biology before music, training in gymnastics and developing a self-taught vocal style. An early EP *See.SZA.Run* (2012) attracted the attention of TDE, the Compton-based label home of Kendrick Lamar and Isaiah Rashad, who signed her. *S* (2013) and *Z* (2014), her early TDE EPs, established her aesthetic: layered harmonics, candid emotional writing about insecurity and desire, and a production palette drawing on indie rock, psychedelia, and trap. *Ctrl* (2017), her long-delayed debut album, was an immediate critical sensation — a collection of confessional, character-rich songs about relationships, jealousy, body image, and self-worth framed by graceful, intricate production. 'The Weekend,' 'Drew Barrymore,' and 'Prom' became defining contemporary R&B tracks. *SOS* (2022), released five years later amid considerable anticipation, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and became one of the longest-charting albums in the chart's history. Its genre-spanning ambition — encompassing rock, pop, trap, and soul — and remarkable candour produced the massive hit 'Kill Bill,' the tender 'Ghost in the Machine,' and numerous other fan favourites. SZA's ability to articulate complex female interiority with humour, honesty, and beauty has made her one of her generation's most important artistic voices.
