Tegan and Sara

Tegan and Sara are Canadian indie pop musicians — identical twin sisters Tegan Rain Quin and Sara Keirsten Quin, born in Calgary, Alberta in 1980. Beginning as a folk-influenced acoustic duo in the late 1990s, they evolved across a decade into one of the most respected acts in North American independent music, balancing artistic integrity with increasing commercial reach. Under Feet Like Ours (1999) and This Business Of Art (2000) established their acoustic indie approach. If It Was You (2002) and So Jealous (2004) built a devoted underground following, with the latter album widely credited as a turning point in their sound — more electrified, more produced, and demonstrating the emotional directness that would define their best work. The Con (2007), co-produced with John Collins and produced alongside Chris Walla of Death Cab for Cutie, is considered their landmark record — a tightly constructed indie rock album that addressed the complexity of relationships with candour and musical sophistication. Sainthood (2009) continued the indie rock direction, while Heartthrob (2013) marked a dramatic pivot into synth-pop, producing I Was a Fool and Closer and introducing the duo to a significantly larger mainstream audience. Love You to Death (2016) followed the pop trajectory, and Hey, I'm Just Like You (2019), a record of re-recorded songs from their teenage years, was accompanied by a memoir, High School. Tegan and Sara are openly gay and have been prominent advocates for LGBTQ+ rights, their openness cited as influential by many fans. Their Tegan and Sara Foundation supports LGBTQ+ girls and women.
