About

The Beatles were a rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960, comprising vocalist and rhythm guitarist John Lennon, vocalist and bassist Paul McCartney, lead guitarist George Harrison, and drummer Ringo Starr. Universally regarded as the most important and influential band in the history of popular music, their eight-year recording career produced a body of work of unparalleled range, quality, and cultural impact — transforming popular music from a largely functional entertainment medium into an art form capable of ambition, experimentation, and social change. Having developed their craft through residencies in Hamburg's club scene and Liverpool's Cavern Club, they were signed by manager Brian Epstein and producer George Martin at Parlophone. Early Beatlemania-era albums *Please Please Me* (1963), *With the Beatles* (1963), and *A Hard Day's Night* (1964) established their commercial dominance on both sides of the Atlantic, with the 1964 American invasion — appearing on The Ed Sullivan Show to an estimated 73 million viewers — permanently changing the landscape of popular culture. The creative development was extraordinary and rapid: from the Merseybeat simplicity of 'Love Me Do' (1962) through the expanded sonic palette of *Rubber Soul* (1965) and *Revolver* (1966, incorporating Indian classical music, tape loops, and studio experimentation) to *Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band* (1967), widely regarded as the first concept album and the moment at which popular music became understood as high culture. *Magical Mystery Tour* (1967), *The White Album* (1968), *Abbey Road* (1969), and *Let It Be* (1970) brought the run to a close amid increasing personal and business tensions. The band's dissolution in 1970 left four solo careers — all substantial — and a catalogue that has never ceased to be discussed, reinterpreted, and reissued. Their influence on rock, pop, songwriting, studio production, and cultural history is so pervasive as to be essentially invisible — the air that everything subsequent breathes.
