The Neighbourhood

The Neighbourhood are an alternative rock band formed in Newbury Park, California in 2011, fronted by vocalist Jesse Rutherford alongside guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, drummer Bryan Sammis, and bassist Mikey Margott. Known for their monochromatic aesthetic, darkwave-inflected sound, and a particular brand of brooding, emotionally raw alt-pop, they rose rapidly from internet buzz to global visibility on the strength of a single that became a generational touchstone. Their debut single 'Sweater Weather' (2012) — built on an instantly recognisable fingerpicked guitar riff and Rutherford's hushed, intimate vocal — became a viral phenomenon and remains one of the most-streamed songs in Spotify history. Its blend of indie rock, hip-hop sensibility, and melancholic romance established the aesthetic that would define the band. Debut album *I Love You.* (2013) arrived to considerable anticipation and featured a bleak, monochromatic sound — black-and-white artwork, downtempo beats, distorted bass, and Rutherford's confessional writing about desire, anxiety, and ambivalence. '#icanteven,' 'Afraid,' and 'Staying Up' demonstrated the range within their aesthetic. *Wiped Out!* (2015) was a more polished and sonically adventurous record drawing on hip-hop production, 1980s synth textures, and experimental pop, while *Hard to Imagine The Neighbourhood Ever Changing* (2018) and subsequent releases explored increasingly left-field territory. Rutherford's solo output and collaborations with hip-hop producers further demonstrated his creative restlessness. The band's relationship with internet culture — early Tumblr adoption, aesthetic consistency, fan community cultivation — made them pioneer navigators of social-media-driven artist-audience relationships and has sustained their relevance across multiple platform generations.
