The Scary Jokes is the solo project of New Jersey-based queer musician, activist and visual artist Liz Lehman. They explore the dark side of dreamy bedroom pop, with a sound more befitting descriptors like hallucinogenic, surrealist and nightmare pop. Created by Lehman in 2014 out of their bedroom in New Jersey, fueled by a stream of early demos, the scary jokes began amassing a cultlike following on Tumblr. In December their first album was released on cassette through Moon Boy Records and was also self-released through their bandcamp. In 2020, the scary jokes signed to Moon Boy Records and began a reissue campaign of their catalog. Currently located in Pennsylvania with partner and occasional collaborator abernathy, who played guitar and contributed lyrics for Burn Pygmalion, Liz has developed a large online following through her 3 independent releases.
