Tom Timothy

American bandleader, conductor, clarinetest, saxophonist, and teacher.
Born June 15, 1895 (Irish parents).
Died October 18, 1958 in Flushing, Queens, New York (age of 63).
Recorded on and off with Ben Selvin's band from 1922-24. He played clarinet and saxaphone on 7 releases for the Southampton Serendars (directed by Ben Selvin) in 1923-27. Recorded on and off with The Savoy Orpheans in 1925-27. When Selvin left for Columbia to become a musical director, Timothy took over Selvin's regular working band and brought it to the Frivolity Club. Timothy played and recorded with Emil Coleman & His Orchestra from 1933-40.
Timothy arranged and orchestrated scores for stage, radio, TV and films, and taught many greats on arranging and music compostion.
Timothy was a music teacher for many years teaching music composition, music theory, and arranging--including at Juilliard and later at his own studio in New York City "Tom Timothy's School of Music". Students of his included Ray Conniff, Bob Haggart, Doc Cheatham, John Benson Brooks, Maury Laws, Marty Gold, Joe Loco, Al Escobar, George David Weiss, and Jerry Carretta--to name a few.
He sold a course called "Arranging for the Modern Orchestra" beginning in 1940 and published a book called "Tom Timothy's Modern Arranging" in 1959.
