Twenty One Pilots

Twenty One Pilots are a musical duo from Columbus, Ohio, formed in 2009 by vocalist Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun (who joined in 2011). One of the most commercially successful and genre-defiant acts of the 2010s, they built a devoted global fanbase — the Skeleton Clique — through emotionally honest songwriting about mental health, faith, and identity, wrapped in a restlessly hybrid sound drawing on alternative rock, hip-hop, pop, and reggae in a style that defied easy categorisation. Founded initially as a three-piece by Tyler Joseph, the duo released independent albums *Twenty One Pilots* (2009) and *Regional At Best* (2011) — the latter developed a substantial online following — before signing to Fueled by Ramen. *Vessel* (2013) produced their breakthrough with 'Holding On to You' and 'Car Radio,' the latter a six-minute meditation on anxiety and silence that demonstrated their emotional ambition. *Blurryface* (2015) was a commercial phenomenon — it became the first album in history to have every track certified gold or platinum by the RIAA. Singles 'Stressed Out' and 'Ride' were inescapable radio presences, while the album's core theme of self-doubt and the internal critic ('Blurryface' as a personification of Joseph's insecurities) gave it genuine emotional weight beneath its pop-rap accessibility. *Trench* (2018) expanded into a dystopian concept album with a more adventurous production palette, and *Scaled And Icy* (2021) offered brighter, more pop-oriented textures. *Clancy* (2024) concluded the Trench-era narrative cycle. Joseph and Dun's stage theatrics — piano balancing, drum kit acrobatics, crowd-surfing while playing instruments — made their live shows legendary, and their refusal to categorise their music has made them one of the most unusual success stories in modern rock.
