About

Vampire Weekend are an indie pop band formed at Columbia University in New York City in 2006, comprising vocalist and guitarist Ezra Koenig, keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij (until 2016), bassist Chris Baio, and drummer Chris Tomson. They arrived with one of the most distinctive debut sounds in indie rock: a bright, energetic fusion of Afrobeat rhythms, Baroque chamber pop, and preppy East Coast wit that was simultaneously fresh and deeply literate. Their self-titled debut (2008) was a revelation — 11 tight, joyous songs built on mbira samples, harpsichord, and steel-drum-inflected guitar, with Koenig singing about Oxford commas, Cape Cod, and campus life with an academic's precision and a pop writer's ear for hooks. 'A-Punk,' 'Oxford Comma,' and 'Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa' were immediate indie anthems. *Contra* (2010) deepened and complicated the palette with reggaeton bass, Auto-Tune experimentation, and the swooning 'White Sky' and 'Cousins.' *Modern Vampires of the City* (2013) was their artistic peak — a more subdued, reflective record grappling with mortality, faith, and urban displacement, with lush production layers and career-best songs in 'Unbelievers,' 'Diane Young,' and 'Ya Hey.' It swept end-of-year lists and won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. After Batmanglij's departure, *Father Of The Bride* (2019) arrived with a more collaborative, freewheeling spirit, featuring duets with Danielle HAIM and Steve Lacy and a sprawling 18-track running time. The album's sun-bleached California looseness contrasted with its predecessors' East Coast tautness but demonstrated Koenig's continued creative evolution. Vampire Weekend's influence on indie pop has been considerable: their synthesis of global music influences, classical training, and downtown cool opened a path followed by many successors.
