Vermines (also known as Les Vermines or The Vermines) is a french punk rock band from Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray (Normandy, near Rouen) formed in 1981 by Philippe Inemer (better known at that time under the nickname "Ted Caddy") a few time before his departure of Alpheratz. The band first line-up was composed of Philippe inemer (ex-Alpheratz, ex-Anoxie), Daniel Lebailly (ex-Anoxie, ex-Ovation, ex-Systeme D), José Bouttard (ex-Fœtus, ex-Ovation) and Pascal Saint Arnoult (ex-Anoxie). They broke up in 1989.
At the beginning, the band was just a project for fun. Indeed, each member came from a hard rock background. They did a 7'' release for pleasure in january 1983, [r3059215]. But, looking at the success they had in live shows and radio broadcasts, they decided to continue the adventure. Pascal Saint Arnoult didn't want to be more involved in the band and leaved it. He was replaced by Jean-Christophe Torchy.
In late 1983, the new line-up released its first LP, [r4017139], and did some openings for Dr. Feelgood. José Bouttard disappeared from the band in 1984 and was replaced at vocals by Philippe Inemer himself.
The new line-up released his second LP, [r4017169], and did some live shows with Tweed, Blaxx or Tupelo Soul. That line-up lasted until 1988 and they decided to take a break in 1989. Jean-Christophe Torchy leaved the band and was replaced by a guitarist known under the nickname Ska-Rabee (who will be involved later in a metal band called Preparation H, also with Daniel Lebailly and Jean-Christophe Torchy).
In 1989, the band released a K7, [m2466571], with some cover songs of Motörhead, Dogs, Ramones or MC5. They broke up the same year and each member lefted in other projects.
Also with the punk band Acide Vicieux, Vermines represented a form of rebellion in the Rouen musical landscape. Indeed, at that time, in the Rouen area, there was a great opposition between bands that came from the left coast (with many factories and some poverty), like Vermines and Acide Vicieux, and bands that came from the right coast (richer, with many bourgeois).
The band purpose was to play music just for fun. Indeed, at that time, they thought there were so many "bad" punk bands in the Rouen area that they could do the same thing too. By the way, the band's name reflected that state of mind : the term "vermines" could be synonymous with "shit" or "less than nothing". As Philippe Inemer said : "We maid music in the only purpose of making people react to our problems and their problems too. At that time, we never thought playing music for winning money. Music was like a weapon for doing rebellion. And we were real shitheads !"
