    Wildliffe Society

Hip-hop group from Jackson, Mississippi. The group was founded by Chris ""The Godfather" Mello-T" Smith along with two DJs from the Shake’em Up Sound Entertainment party crew, DJ Sleepy Nevilles and DJ Howie How. Originally a local hip-hop party promotion company called The Underground, the group decided to get into the hip-hop recording field. Funded by local entrepreneur Donald Ray Quinn, they managed to land a record deal with the Memphis-based Brutal Records (2). The group released several singles and a full-length album that spawned some local attention. Attempting to focus more on lyrics, the group added local hip-hop emcee Clifton Clincy "Rated X" around 1994-95. The Wildliffe Society began getting exposure out of state with the single "Jacktown (What's Up Jack)" and eventually caught the attention of Irv Gotti of Brutal Records (2), which led Wildliffe Society to become the first hip-hop group from Mississippi to get signed to a major label (under TVT's subsidiary label Brutal Records (2)). There single "Jacktown / What's Up Jack" was re-released on Blunt Recordings and became not only a local anthem but a regional hit in 1995. Wildliffe Soceity disbanded by the end of the 1990's, with Mellow T focusing on a new hip-hop collective Children Of The Cornbread and DJ Sleep Nevilles transitioning into Christian hip-hop and ministry.
