Swedish composer, pianist and conductor, born February 7, 1871 in Stockholm, died November 20, 1927 in Jonsered, Västergötland.
As a young man, Stenhammar was known as a pianist. He played and toured with, among others, the violinist and composer Tor Aulin. Stenhammar was educated first in Stockholm and later in Berlin. At the beginning of his career, he was strongly impressed by Richard Wagner and Anton Bruckner, but eventually developed a lighter, Nordic-colored style, influenced by, among others, Jean Sibelius and Carl Nielsen.
He belonged to the cultural family Stenhammar. He was the son of the composer and architect Per Ulrik Stenhammar and the countess Louise Rudenschöld and the brother of the architect Ernst Stenhammar. Wilhelm Stenhammar married the artist Helga Westerberg and became the father of the singers undefined and undefined.
