Since late 60's he has written songs for Roberta Flack, Miriam Makeba, Johnny Mathis, Grover Washington, Jr., Kellee Patterson etc., often with songwriting partner Ralph MacDonald. Salter and MacDonald also co-founded and owned Antisia Music, Inc. with William Eaton.
