    Woody Herman And The Fourth Herd

    Note: From January to May 1956, the band was also called Woody Herman And The Swingin' Herd in the time of the Capitol recordings. This ended with the switch to Verve Records in 1957. The term was later used for the successor of the fourth herd, Woody Herman And The Swingin' Herd, from 1960 to 1967.

    After the short period of Woody Herman And The Las Vegas Herd, a new big band formed from the Las Vegas line-up. This band, sometimes also called 'The New Third Herd' is known in literature by 'The fourth herd', referring to an album title from 1959. This band was nucleated by the Las Vegas band, which was composed of Hollywood studio personnel and a nucleus from the Herman octet.
