Alt-J

Alt-J (stylised as ∆) are an indie rock band formed in Leeds in 2007, comprising vocalist and guitarist Joe Newman, keyboardist Gus Unger-Hamilton, bassist Thom Green, and (until 2012) guitarist Gwil Sainsbury. One of the most original and successful British bands of the 2010s, they created an entirely distinctive sound — mixing indie rock, folk, electronica, and hip-hop influences through complex vocal harmonies, unusual rhythmic patterns, and dense, literary lyrics — that won the Mercury Prize and sold over five million albums worldwide. Having met at the University of Leeds and developed their sound through self-released recordings, they signed to Infectious Music and released debut *An Awesome Wave* (2012), which won the Mercury Prize for UK Album of the Year. The album's combination of Joe Newman's unusual falsetto harmonies with Gus Unger-Hamilton's keyboard lines, references to art, literature, and film in the lyrics (including songs about Jenny from The Shining, the film *Fitzcarraldo*, and Matilda's father), and production that felt simultaneously folk-influenced and electronic made it one of the most distinctive British debut albums in years. 'Breezeblocks,' 'Tessellate,' and 'Something Good' were standouts. *This Is All Yours* (2014) debuted at number one in the UK and continued their artistic development, with 'Every Other Freckle' and 'Left Hand Free' demonstrating their range. *Relaxer* (2017) pushed into more experimental territory, and *The Dream* (2022) showed continued evolution with more politically engaged lyrics. Their sound — immediately recognisable due to Newman's vocal approach and the band's harmonic complexity — has proved genuinely difficult to copy, making Alt-J one of the more singular presences in 21st-century British indie rock.
