Foals

Foals are a rock band formed in Oxford in 2005, comprising vocalist and guitarist Yannis Philippakis, guitarist Jimmy Smith, bassist Walter Gervers, keyboardist Edwin Congreave, and drummer Jack Bevan. One of the most consistently excellent and artistically ambitious British rock bands of their generation, they have evolved from math-rock-influenced post-punk to arena-rock grandeur over a series of six albums that each represent a different dimension of their ambition. Having developed their sound through Oxford's live scene and early attention from blogs and NME, they signed to Sub Pop and Transgressive Records and released debut *Antidotes* (2008), produced by TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek. The album's anxious, interlocking guitar lines — influenced by Afrobeat rhythms and math rock's precision — and Philippakis's urgent delivery made immediate impact, though the album's density required patient listening. *Total Life Forever* (2010), produced by Luke Smith, was a significant opening-up — the songs breathed more, the production was more spacious, and 'Spanish Sahara' and 'This Orient' demonstrated a new emotional range. *Holy Fire* (2013) was their commercial breakthrough, with 'Inhaler,' 'My Number,' and 'Mountain at My Gates' all becoming festival and radio staples. *What Went Down* (2015) continued in a harder, more direct rock direction. The two-part *Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost* (2019) — Part 1 a more danceable, electronic-influenced record; Part 2 a heavier guitar statement — was their most ambitious and critically acclaimed work, demonstrating the full range of their development. *Life Is Yours* (2022) was lighter and more immediately accessible. Philippakis's physical, often reckless live presence — climbing speaker stacks, crowd-surfing during quiet songs — has made Foals one of the most distinctive and viscerally exciting live acts in British rock.
