Spanish-language rock band from Mexico City formed in 1987. Having their origins as Las insólitas imágenes de aurora, they emerged from the Mexican underground scene and then achieved fame throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, with the help of the series —and marketing campaign— undefined. Their style can be described as a hybrid of British new wave, progressive rock and Latin percussion underscored by deep, somber, and Latin American-Mexican-Spanish influenced lyrics and the vocal style of Saúl Hernández.
The original line-up consisted of Saúl Hernández (vocals & guitar), Sabo Romo (bass guitar), Alfonso André (drums) and Diego Herrera (keyboards and saxophone). Argentine guitarist Alejandro Marcovich joined in 1989 to form a quintet. During 1993, Romo and Herrera left the band and the remaining members (already established as a trio) released their fourth and last album. Finally, the differences that existed between Hernández and Marcovich led to the group's retirement in 1996. Hernández and André would continue as Jaguares, which would include pieces by Caifanes as well as new material. Later, in 2011, after a reconciliation with Marcovich, Hernández formally revived Caifanes as a quintet. Finally, without any further internal fights being presumed, in 2014 a statement announced that Caifanes would return to the original quartet without Marcovich.
